Canada Cup XC #5, Mt. Washington, BC

July 29, 2006

The course at Mount Washington on Vancouver Island was a fun mix of technical singletrack, climbing, fast fire road, all against a beautiful alpine backdrop. I felt strong on race day and secured a seventh-place finish in the final race of the Canada Cup Series.

My best Canada Cup result of the season! It was nice to secure a top 10 in Canada, my first this season. The day before the race, I wasn't very optimistic, because I felt tired in the pre-ride the previous day. It was impossible to ride this course easy because of the steepness of the main climb, the demanding descents and the pedal-to-the-metal power sections. Once I realized it was easier to ride it hard than easy, everything was okay.

During the race, I felt great on the technical sections and I was able to hammer the flat, power bits. The main climb went pretty well, but I know that's one of the aspects I need to work on.
